Flying to Liwonde: what actually flies in 2026

Liwonde has an airstrip inside the park and an aircraft fleet that serves it, but almost nobody arrives that way. Here is the real state of flying to Liwonde as of 14 September 2026, including a correction to a name that keeps circulating out of date.

If you only want the answer

If you are coming from Blantyre or Lilongwe for Liwonde alone, drive: 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Blantyre and about 4 hours from Lilongwe on decent roads beats arranging and paying for a charter. Flying earns its place when you are linking Liwonde to Nyika, roughly 480 km north of Lilongwe, or to Majete near Blantyre, distances that make road-linking all three parks in one trip impractical. The carrier that flew this circuit as Ulendo Airlink rebranded to FlyNyasa in February 2022, and on 14 September 2026 its site still listed scheduled seat-rate flights to Liwonde, Majete and Nyika's Chelinda Lodge, though without published days or fares. Confirm directly before you build a fixed itinerary around it.

Ulendo Airlink doesn't exist under that name anymore

Search for Ulendo Airlink and Liwonde together and you will still find guides and even lodge pages citing it as the airline that flies Malawi's safari circuit. It did, but not since February 2022. Ulendo Airlink rebranded to FlyNyasa, the trading name of Nyasa Express Limited, a Malawian charter operator that began flying in 2011. Our own getting-there page for Liwonde currently lists Ulendo Airlink and Nyasa Express as though they were separate carriers; based on what we verified on 14 September 2026, they are the same company under an old and a current name, and that page needs correcting.

What FlyNyasa actually offers, checked directly on flynyasa.com on 14 September 2026: a fleet spanning Cessna 210s and 208B Grand Caravan EXs up to a Beechcraft Super King Air 200, a Pilatus PC-12 and an Embraer Legacy 650, flying out of Kamuzu International in Lilongwe to nine domestic destinations plus Mfuwe in Zambia. The destination list includes Liwonde National Park, Majete Wildlife Reserve and Nyika's Chelinda Lodge alongside Likoma Island, Club Makokola, Tongole and Mzuzu, which is the circuit people mean when they talk about flying between Malawi's parks.

The site separates seat-rate flights, described as scheduled service on set routes, from bespoke charters, but it publishes no timetable, no frequency and no fares for either. That is a real gap: you cannot check a departure day online the way you would with a normal airline. The Mvuu airstrip reality

Liwonde's airstrip serves the park's fly-in camps, and the landing fee is a published $20 per aircraft, but the strip's formal name is not documented anywhere authoritative. Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp, the two properties closest to it, both describe access simply as charter access without naming the strip, and our own map page for the park warns that gate and airstrip names found online should be treated with caution because they are not consistently recorded.

One detail complicates this further. Robin Pope Safaris names Makanga Airstrip as the strip serving its own Kuthengo Camp, which sits on open plain rather than the riverfront. Whether Makanga is the same landing ground used for Mvuu's charters or a separate strip closer to Kuthengo is not stated anywhere we could verify, so do not assume the camps share one runway.

None of this changes how a booking actually works. Your lodge or the charter operator arranges the landing and the road or boat transfer onward, and you never need to know the strip's name yourself. It only matters if you are trying to independently verify logistics before you book, in which case ask your lodge directly rather than trusting what is published online.

The honest comparison: drive or fly

For a single trip to Liwonde, driving wins on every measure that matters. Blantyre is 120 km away, 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on which of the park's own published figures you use, and Lilongwe is about 250 km, roughly 4 hours. Both cities have international airports, Chileka (BLZ) at Blantyre and Kamuzu (LLW) at Lilongwe, so most visitors fly internationally into one of those and then drive the last leg themselves or with a pre-arranged transfer. A charter into the park replaces a half-day drive with a flight you have to specially arrange, priced per aircraft rather than per seat, at a rate nobody publishes.

Flying genuinely makes sense in one situation: you are combining Liwonde with parks too far apart to link by road inside a normal trip. Nyika sits about 480 km north of Lilongwe, and Majete is close to Blantyre in the opposite direction, so driving all three in one trip burns days on the road that could be spent in the parks. That is the trip FlyNyasa's seat-rate network is built for, and it is the one case where the extra cost and the uncertainty of an unpublished schedule are worth working around.

If your trip is Liwonde alone, or Liwonde paired with just one nearby park, drive. Keep the charter option for a genuine multi-park circuit, and confirm with FlyNyasa that the flight you are planning around actually exists on your dates before you commit to it.
