How to get to Liwonde National Park
Liwonde is one of Africa's easier parks to reach: 120 km from Blantyre and about 250 km from Lilongwe, on decent roads most of the way. There are no scheduled flights, but charters serve the park, and in the wet season boats become part of the transport system.
By road from Blantyre (the usual way)
Blantyre is the closest big city at 120 km. African Parks' own site quotes both 2.5 hours and 3.5 hours for the drive on different pages, so plan on 2.5 to 3.5 hours; the longer figure likely reflects the extra run to the Chinguni Hill camps in the southern sector.
From Lilongwe it is about 250 km and around 4 hours. From Zomba the distance is short, roughly 50 to 60 km, and about an hour is realistic; ignore the 27-minute figure that distance calculators produce, which assumes highway speeds that do not exist on Malawian roads. From Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi, reckon on 216 to 218 km and 3.5 to 4 hours, which makes a lake-and-park combination an easy itinerary.

Self-drive, and the community guide trick
- Self-driving is explicitly permitted and officially supported: you may use your own vehicle on park roads.
- A 4x4 is recommended between December and April; outside that window a 2WD is workable. Some routes close in the rains.
- Community Guides can be hired at the main gate to join your own vehicle. It is cheap, the money stays local, and a trained pair of eyes transforms what you find. A genuinely distinctive Liwonde option.
- Road access is from the southern side of the park; a river crossing exists on one approach, and pre-arranged boats can be taken from Liwonde town.
- Fuel availability near the park is not reliably documented, so arrive with a full tank from Blantyre, Zomba or Lilongwe and carry reserve range.
By air
There are no scheduled commercial flights to Liwonde. The two gateways are Kamuzu International Airport (LLW), 26 km from Lilongwe and the main international entry point, and Chileka International Airport (BLZ), 16 km from Blantyre and better situated for the park.
Charter operators fly to the park's airstrip: Ulendo Airlink, which runs a small fleet of Cessna and Dornier aircraft out of Kamuzu International and lists Liwonde as a destination, and Nyasa Express. The park charges a $20 landing fee per aircraft. The airstrip's formal name is not documented anywhere authoritative, so treat any name you read online with caution.
By boat, in the wet season
Liwonde has a transport mode most parks lack: the river. When the rains deteriorate the roads between December and April, boat shuttles along the Shire become the primary way of moving guests to and from the river camps. If you visit in the green season, expect part of your transfer to happen on water, which is less a hardship than a preview of the park's best activity.
