Things to do in Liwonde National Park

Liwonde is unusual: the park itself sells its activities at fixed, published, low prices. A two-hour boat safari on the Shire costs $25, and you do not need to be a guest at a luxury lodge to book one.

The boat safari: why people choose Liwonde

This is the park's signature, and the reason to pick Liwonde over any other Malawian park. Two hours on the Shire runs you past hippo pods, dense crocodiles, drinking elephants and waterbuck on the banks, with African fish eagles calling overhead, and it costs $25 per adult, $20 for children aged 7 to 11.

That price is the structural surprise of Liwonde. In most of Africa a river safari is something you get by paying lodge rates. Here the park sells it directly, so a backpacker camping for $12 a night has access to the same river as a guest at the most expensive lodge.

Game drives and the sundowner drive

The park sells two-hour game drives at $25 per adult ($15 per child), typically morning or late afternoon. The option that deserves more attention is the three-hour sundowner drive at $35 ($25 per child), which runs into darkness and is your only realistic route to Liwonde's nocturnal cast: genets, civets, hyaenas, and better odds of leopard. If you skip it, four species on the checklist collapse to near-zero. It is the highest-leverage $35 on the whole tariff.

One naming note: the official rate sheet lists only a sundowner drive, while the camps advertise night drives. Whether these are the same product under two names is not documented, so ask your camp what you are actually booking.

Walking safaris: read the small print

Two-hour guided walks cost $25 and run in the early mornings, dry season only, in groups of at most six with an armed scout. Under-16s are not permitted, which many third-party sites fail to mention. If a walk matters to your group, plan around those three constraints before you commit.

Self-drive, with or without a community guide

Self-driving is officially permitted year-round on park roads for a $5 vehicle fee, with a 4x4 recommended from December to April. The distinctive Liwonde move is to hire a Community Guide at the main gate to ride with you: it costs little, the money goes directly to local communities, and a guide who reads this landscape daily will find you far more than you would find alone. No official price is published, so agree the fee at the gate.

Hides, birding and the camp extras

Mvuu Camp has a treehouse deck and an underground hide, free to guests, where you sit at water level while the game comes to you.

Park rules and practicalities

Gates open 06:00 and close 18:00.
Park fees and activities are prepaid with your accommodation; the park states fees are payable in advance with booking.
Walking is only with an official guide or scout, on the scheduled walks.
Children: activity child rates cover ages 7 to 11; walks are 16 and over. The under-7 policy is unstated, so ask when booking.
